Outdoors Bringing Whanau Together
15 June 2015

A local Rotorua whanau decided that they needed to come together for some fun activities, to connect particularly the younger members, to get to know one another better and to understand to whom & where they belong. So as a result of a whanau hui "Awesome Whanau Events" came into being. Using social media the whanau have connected to initiate a series of active, enjoyable, fun experiences together. They included: walks in the beautiful Whakarewarewa forest to the lookout overlooking their Whakarewarewa village & thermal lands; mountain biking to the Green Lake, where their kuia lies; sailing on Rotoiti with its many ancestral connections, listening to the stories & soaking in their hot pools of Manupirua: a marae stay at Otaramarae to learn their wider tribal links, swim, play & have a crazy fun amazing race. Walking, mountain biking, swims, environmental clean ups, are all part of their future plans as they traverse the many lakes, land & marae that the whanau belong to with active fun times together.

We can all get out there and enjoy the beautiful surroundings Rotorua has to offer. Encourage our own whanau and friends to join us in exploring the natural surroundings that lay on our doorstep, learn the history of the land, help to nuture our environment by doing something as simple as picking up rubbish as we walk. The “Awesome Whanau Events” is an example I plan on repeating with my own family so together we can be more active, healthy and appreciate our valuable time together.
