There are so many hidden treasures in Opotiki and I have to say that the Hukutaia Domain would be my favourite. I have been here many times in the past and the changes over the years are quite remarkable. There is an official Care Group for the Domain and they have created a great track and have the place looking amazing. I met up with the care group and they were just about to go out checking traps for possums. Their passion for this place is incredible.
The walk is easy and flat and you seem to stroll rather than walk, taking in everything around you. The collection of trees are quite incredible and include some rather rare plants. At times you feel as though you are walking through tropical rain forests and it was particularly beautiful when we walked through as the sun was streaming through the trees.
The huge Puriri trees are spectacular and are a favourite place of the wood pigeon. We must have seen half a dozen while we were there.
The large sacred Puriri tree named Taketakerau is mystical and quite spell binding and even the kids seemed to whisper around it. It is hard to believe that it was growing here 2000 years ago in the days of the Roman Empire.
This place is definitely worth a visit next time you are in the area. The walk is no more than 30 minutes at a leisurely stroll and is very much kid friendly.
