October is Outdoors Month
28 September 2016

October is your chance to try something new outdoors with Play in the Bay and Sport Bay of Plenty.

Throughout October there are a range of free or low-cost activities happening across the region aimed at providing beginners an opportunity to have a go. There are fantastic school holiday options for kids and adults alike, many of which are taking place on Virtually on Track gem sites.

Geo-teering - where you navigate trails using your mobile phone to find hidden markers - is on offer region-wide, with Papamoa Hills, TECT All Terrain Park, Lake Tikitapu, Puarenga Stream, the Whakatane Bird Walk, and Tarawera River all playing host to 'have a go' days. At McLaren Falls Park, you can try your hand at the 9- or 18-hole at Disc Golf course, or if exploring by bike is more your style, there are four dates on offer to enjoy a ride along the Opotiki Dunes Trail followed by a BBQ.

Other active October options include walking groups in Te Puke, Opotiki, and Rotorua's Redwoods, as well as tai chi, yoga, adventure racing, and special activities for the elderly.

While you're exploring the outdoors, why not join in with the Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) "Photo a Day" Challenge?

Connecting with nature is this year's theme for MHAW; using the prompts, get inspired to head out in the wild and snap a pic each day from Oct 1-16. There are amazing daily prizes to be won - post your daily photo on your Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram page with the hashtag #MHAWNZ and you're in to win!
